Fitness 2021: The trends you can’t afford to miss
An eventful year is behind us. 2020 hit sports enthusiasts hard, with Coronavirus making it impossible to regularly visit the gym.
But every cloud has a silver lining! In times of lockdown and home office, many of us have rekindled our love for sports.
Outdoor and virtual sport options have become more varied, flexible and suitable for everyday life than ever before. Instead of “harder, faster, stronger,” we’re focussing on taking care of our bodies. Health has taken centre stage.
But how can we keep fit in the future while observing social distance and hygiene rules? Which sports are in vogue and which will celebrate a revival? We conducted some internal analyses to reveal the fitness trends of 2021.
Outdoor is King
From run trails to boot camps, fitness fans old and new will shift their workouts to the great outdoors this year. As soon as the days get brighter and friendlier, more and more gyms will set up their equipment outside, so you can enjoy rooftop yoga sessions, outdoor boot camps or HIIT in the park. These will be online and offline favourites in 2021.
Outdoor, socially distanced sports such as tennis, squash and golf will also experience a revival!
Mindset: The connection between body and mind comes into focus
Yoga breathwork, mental training and Pilates will become increasingly popular, as they reduce stress, promote body awareness and train flexibility and balance.
Our research shows that in 2021 fitness and functional training will be combined with Tai Chi, Qi Gong and singing bowl meditation to create balance between physical and mental training. Last year especially many of our members enjoyed online yoga via livestream.
Home gyms continue to boom
Home gyms will continue to trend in 2021, especially in the winter months as gyms and training facilities remain closed. However, people will form home-gym habits which will turn into long-term trends.
With our new online classes via livestream, you can flexibly workout from home with your favourite trainers and try new things without the self-consciousness that comes with going to class.
It’s never been so easy to leave your comfort zone and have fun unobserved, so it’s no wonder classes like chair dance, pole dance and online striptease are all the rage as a live online option.
Sporty staycation: water sports for that holiday feeling
Water sports is the ultimate insider tip for anyone looking for sports, fun and relaxation. Water sports are an effective whole body workout that strengthens the core and trains balance. Whether with a kayak, canoe or pedal boat – explore your city on the waterways.
Stand up paddling (SUP) and wakeboarding have the potential to become by far the most popular sports of summer 2021.
Find out why SUP was a hit last year here.
Variety is key
It’s clear that colour and variety will be in big demand in 2021. Fitness fanatics will enjoy a wide range of different classes, including HIIT yoga, barre workouts and other concepts that combine strength, flexibility and endurance. This variety will be the key to a holistic and healthy fitness regime in 2021.
Training in groups
Fitness fans love the motivation that comes with a community and will enthusiastically engage in group sports as soon as it’s possible.
“General contact restrictions and isolated work in the home office make the desire for real encounters and togetherness grow even stronger. Team spirit and community will become even more important in 2021,” says Moritz Kreppel, CEO and co-founder of Urban Sports Club.
To conclude
The fitness trends of 2021 are all about YOU. They’re about taking care of yourself, doing what makes you feel good, and exercising anywhere, any time – wherever you are.
Community is more important than ever. Livestreams and virtual training groups will keep us connected with each other and our favourite trainers.
The fitness trends of 2021 are no longer about workouts alone, but shared values and the desire to keep moving. And that’s kind of beautiful, don’t you think?
